Why Does the iPhone Back Button Feel So Weird?

You just want to go back one screen — and which control to use depends on what you're trying to leave.

You're probably here because you're two or three screens deep in something, you want to get back to the screen you came from, and there isn't an obvious button in front of you. The anxious thought is real: "Do I swipe? Tap something? Close the whole thing? Will I lose what I just entered?" That feeling makes sense, and it doesn't mean you're using the iPhone wrong.

There isn't one universal "go back" button that looks the same on every screen. What you do depends on what you want: the screen you came from, out of the app, or just to close what's in front of you. The screen you're on decides which control is available.

I want the screen I came from

Look at the top of the screen for Back, a left-arrow, or a label naming the level you came from. In Safari, the toolbar has a back arrow you can tap. Some apps and interfaces also support a left-edge swipe to move back, though not every app does. In Settings, a previous-level label or arrow sits at the top-left. A few apps design their own back control instead — if nothing responds, look for an on-screen button the app provides.

I want to leave the app

On a Face ID iPhone, swipe up from the bottom edge to go to the Home Screen. That leaves the app — it isn't the same as going back one screen. If you wanted the previous screen, don't swipe up; look for Back on the screen itself.

I want to close this sheet, window, or form

Tap Close, Done, Cancel, or the X. These end the current view rather than step back through it. Read the label before tapping, especially if you have unsaved information on screen.

I want the app I was just using

On a Face ID iPhone, swipe along the bottom edge to move between open apps, or swipe up from the bottom edge and pause to open the App Switcher. This is separate from going back a screen.

I'm typing or filling something in

Don't swipe or dismiss the view at random — you may lose what you entered. Use an explicit Back, Cancel, or Done control, and read any confirmation about saving or discarding before you leave.

You're not missing a secret button. Different screens simply give you different ways out.
