Why Does My iPhone Battery Drop So Fast After I Get It?

The first few days of heavy background work can look like a battery problem. Often it isn't.

You're probably here because you just got a new (or newly reset) iPhone, and the battery is falling faster than you expected. It's tempting to think the battery is faulty. Most of the time it isn't — the phone is just doing a lot of invisible work all at once, and that work eases off after a few days.
Direct answer: a new iPhone often drains quickly at first because setup, restore, photo syncing, and app downloads run in the background for days. This is an adjustment period, not usually a bad battery. It normally settles within a week. You can confirm what's actually using power in Settings > Battery before assuming anything is wrong.

The first-days busy period

When a phone is new or freshly restored, it isn't really "idle." Behind the screen it is:

All of that is real work the battery pays for. Once it's done, daily drain usually drops to a level that feels normal for your usage.

Background activity you can't see

Even after the obvious setup ends, the phone keeps doing quiet things: optimizing photos and videos for the device, finishing iCloud downloads, refreshing mail and app content in the background, and building its search index. On a poor Wi-Fi or cellular connection, it also works harder just to stay connected. None of this means the battery is defective — it means the phone is catching up from a standing start.

Two things you control that matter most

What the Battery screen tells you

Open Settings > Battery. You'll see when the battery was last charged and a Daily Usage graph of the charge level through the day. Tap View All Battery Usage to see how much each app used over the last eight days — split between on-screen and background use. If your iPhone has suggestions, they appear just above the graph; tapping one takes you to the relevant setting. This screen is the honest way to tell whether one app is the cause or the phone is simply busy overall.

Battery Health vs how long it lasts in a day

These are two different ideas. Battery Health & Charging (under Settings > Battery) shows the battery's maximum capacity compared with when it was new. A brand-new phone should read close to 100%. That number changes slowly over months and years. "My battery fell 30% by noon today" is about today's usage, not health — a new phone with 100% health can still drain fast on a busy day. Don't confuse a busy afternoon with a worn battery.

A built-in helper when you need more hours

If a day is longer than your battery, there's a built-in tool: Low Power Mode (in Settings > Battery, or from Control Center). It reduces background activity — things like mail fetch, automatic downloads, and some visual effects — so the charge lasts longer. The phone can turn it on automatically at 20%, and off again once you recharge past about 80%, but you can switch it on yourself any time you want the battery to stretch. It's the calm alternative to hunting through twenty toggles: one switch for "make it last," and you turn it off when you're plugged in.

A simple way to decide if it's normal

Ask: "Has it been a few days, and am I doing heavy things (photos syncing, bad signal, bright screen, lots of video)?" If yes, wait — it usually improves. Ask instead: "After a week of normal use, is it dramatically worse than a phone like mine should be, getting hot, or shutting down at 20–30%?" If that's yes, it's worth a closer look. The Battery screen answers the first question; time answers the second.

You probably don't need to worry about

You don't need to switch off twenty settings or install a "battery saver" app from the store — those rarely help and some make things worse. You also don't need to obsessively close every app; re-opening apps can use more power than leaving them sleeping. Charging overnight is fine: the phone stops at full and, with Optimized Battery Charging on by default, avoids sitting at 100% the whole night. And you don't need to drain it to zero before charging — lithium-ion batteries prefer little-and-often.
