What is the App Library and do I need to use it?
It's an automatic, sorted list of all your apps. Handy — but completely optional.
Where it is and what's inside
To see it, keep swiping left from your last Home Screen page. At the top you'll find two special rows:
- Suggestions. A few apps the phone thinks you might want right now, based on time and habits.
- Recently Added. Apps you just installed — which is why a brand-new app sometimes shows up there before you've placed it anywhere.
Below those, the rest of your apps are grouped into folders by category — things like Social, Productivity, Entertainment, and Utilities. iOS decides the grouping; you don't maintain it. The search bar at the top also lets you type an app's name and jump straight to it.
Do you need to use it?
No. This is the part people most often get wrong. The App Library is not a replacement for your Home Screen and Apple doesn't expect you to live there. Three common ways people use it:
- Never. Plenty of people keep every app on their Home Screen pages and ignore the App Library entirely. That's fine.
- As a backup finder. When you can't spot an app, swipe to the App Library and search. It's faster than hunting through pages.
- To hide clutter. Some people move rarely used apps out of sight (see below) and let the Library hold them. This keeps the Home Screen calm without deleting anything.
None of these is "correct." Use it as much or as little as you like.
You probably don't need to
- Move all your apps into it. You don't get points for a tidy App Library. If you like your apps where they are, leave them.
- Worry that it appeared "on its own." It has been part of iPhone since iOS 14. Seeing it for the first time after an update is normal, not a sign something changed on your phone.
- Think you deleted an app by sending it there. An app in the App Library is still installed and still works. "Remove from Home Screen" is not "delete."
- Re-sort the folders. You can't rename or reorder the Library's categories, and there's no reason to — it's a search aid, not a filing system you maintain.
How to keep your Home Screen the way you like it
If the App Library appeals as a way to reduce clutter, here's the one move worth knowing:
- Long-press an app icon on your Home Screen.
- Choose Remove from Home Screen. The app disappears from the page but stays installed and lives in the App Library.
- To bring it back, open the App Library, long-press the app there, and choose Add to Home Screen.
This is different from Delete App, which removes it for real. "Remove from Home Screen" just hides the icon from your pages — a good way to keep a banking or travel app available without it sitting on your main screen.
If you want an almost-empty Home Screen
The App Library pairs with one more trick if your goal is a calm screen: you can hide whole Home Screen pages, not just single apps.
- Press and hold the row of dots above the dock — the little page indicator that shows which page you're on.
- Uncheck the pages you don't want to see. They disappear from your swipeable Home Screen but their apps stay put in the App Library.
- Keep one tidy page (your daily apps) plus the App Library, and the rest is out of sight.
This is reversible — press the dots again and re-check a page to bring it back. It's the difference between "hide a few apps" and "hide a whole category of apps," and both routes end at the same place: a Home Screen you control.
Why a new app sometimes "isn't on my Home Screen"
This trips up a lot of people and is worth separating from the Library itself: when you install an app, iPhone may place it in the App Library only, not on a Home Screen page. That's a setting, not a glitch. If you'd rather new apps always appear on your Home Screen:
- Settings > Home Screen (the option is labeled around new-app downloads).
- Choose to add new apps to the Home Screen instead of the App Library.
If that's the exact puzzle you came in with — "I installed an app and can't find it" — it's covered in more detail here: Why can't I find an app I just installed on my iPhone?
A simple way to decide
Ask one question: does your Home Screen feel calm or crowded? If it feels calm, ignore the App Library. If it feels crowded, use "Remove from Home Screen" on the few apps you rarely open, and let the Library hold them. You're not organizing the phone — you're just hiding what you don't need to see.
